| Callanish Society is a small, grassroots non-profit
organization dedicated to improving the emotional and spiritual health of
our communities by assisting families with cancer, and their health care
providers, to explore illness and/or death openly and consciously.
Weeklong retreats and ongoing support programs are offered by a team of
health care professionals and volunteers who believe that communities can
develop resilience in the face of illness and healing, loss and
death, by coming together in a process of authentic dialogue and in
an in-depth exploration of what it means to heal emotionally and
spiritually while living with, or dying from, cancer.

Why the name Callanish?
The Standing Stones of
Callanish, located on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides off the north
west coast of Scotland, form the second largest stone circle in Britain.
They are thought to date as far back as 3000 BC.
There has been great
speculation over the years about what the circle was intended for: a temple,
a place of healing the sick, a burial site, an astronomical observatory? The
answer remains a mystery.
We chose the name Callanish
because of what the stone circle represents. People with cancer and their
loved ones come together in a retreat, they sit in a circle together, and
they explore what healing means for each of them.
The process of healing,
whether it be into life or into death, is different for each person, and
must be uncovered by the gentle process of being together without judgment.
What each person needs for healing requires an unravelling of the mystery.
